VOLUNTEERING YOUR TIME

The COMPEER Program

Compeer is a national program sponsored locally by Pawnee Mental Health Services which brings volunteers and mental health clients together in a one-to-one friendship. Friendship is what Compeer is all about.

What kind of people become Compeer volunteers? There is really no typical Compeer volunteer. Volunteers range from college students to senior citizens. What they have in common is that they are men and women who care and want to help others improve their quality of life.

What do Compeer friends do together? Compeer friends meet a minimum of 4 hours per month to do whatever they enjoy --- go for a walk, have a cup of coffee, or just talk. Sometimes the volunteers help their friends accomplish specific goals. What they do together isn't as important as just being together. Both friends make a commitment to stay in the match for one year and they can renew the match for another year if they wish.

How can you become a Compeer volunteer? If you are 18 or older and wish to be a volunteer, just follow these steps: 1) Call (785) 587-4333 or come by Pawnee Community Support Services located at 1558 Hayes Drive, Manhattan, KS. You will need to complete an application, attend an interview, participate in training, and meet your friend and your friend's case manager. You will then begin what will be an enjoyable and rewarding experience!

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ONE PERSON'S LIFE. COMPEER NEEDS YOU TO BE A FRIEND!!
