Becky's Story — From Denial to Determination

From Denial to Determination A Success Story of Strength, Advocacy, and the Will to Be Heard

Becky was born and raised in Manhattan, Kansas. For years, she thrived as a hardworking, independent woman who rarely took a sick day and never backed down from a challenge. Her strong work ethic and sharp wit carried her through long shifts in physically demanding jobs. She was known for showing up, giving her all, and getting the job done.

But everything changed on July 31, 2010.

While working, Becky experienced a serious accident involving a pallet jack that crushed her foot. What started as a traumatic workplace injury became the beginning of a long, painful journey—physically, emotionally, and legally. Her injury led to significant nerve damage and chronic pain that made it impossible for her to continue the work she once loved. Over time, complications compounded. She began wearing a brace, underwent numerous medical evaluations, and experienced physical limitations that affected nearly every part of her daily life.

With her independence suddenly stripped away, Becky faced the harsh reality of needing long-term support. But she was determined to keep going—not just for herself, but for her daughter, her family, and everyone who had stood by her.

In 2018, after exhausting her options through workers’ compensation, Becky began the process of applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). What followed was nearly seven years of legal hurdles, appeals, and delays. Her case was denied multiple times despite substantial medical evidence and professional opinions that confirmed her inability to work.

Throughout it all, Becky leaned on the services and support she received through Pawnee Mental Health. She found more than just medical guidance—she found advocacy, encouragement, and people who believed in her. April Brothers, Becky’s Benefits Specialist, worked closely with her from the very beginning. Even as April advanced in her role at Pawnee, she remained dedicated to Becky’s case, continuing to assist with every appeal, every document, and every hearing.

In addition to April’s support, Becky credits her therapist, Eva Maria, as another important part of her journey. “Eva Maria has been a huge part of my mental health and keeps me in line as much as possible,” Becky said with a laugh. “She’s always been very straightforward with me, which has been a perfect fit for me and has given me really good tools to work with depending on what my mindset was—or is.”

“April never gave up on me—not once,” Becky said. “She fought for me like no one else. We became a team.”

Becky’s strength never wavered, even when the system failed her again and again, April shared. “Her fight became my fight. I believed in her because I saw her truth— and I knew she deserved to be heard. No one should have to go through that alone.”

Becky remembers the countless times she and April met to prepare for hearings, challenge false assumptions, and ensure that nothing was overlooked. Their collaboration spanned years and reflected a rare kind of trust and determination that helped carry Becky through the darkest moments of the process.

On April 8, 2025, Becky finally received the decision she had waited nearly seven years to hear: her disability claim had been approved.

“April and I both cried,” she said. “It wasn’t even about the money—it was about being seen. It meant everything to know that someone finally understood what I had been through.”

Looking back, Becky is clear: “I wasn’t trying to cheat the system. I just wanted what was right. I was following the rules and still being told no. That’s not okay.”

Since that day, Becky has slowly begun to rebuild her life on her own terms. Gardening has become a source of peace. She’s discovered new routines that work with her physical limitations. And most importantly, she’s found her voice.

Becky now hopes to become an advocate for others navigating similar battles. “People don’t realize how hard this process is until they go through it. I want others to know they’re not alone. There are people and programs—like the team at Pawnee—that will stand with you.”

When asked what kept her going, Becky didn’t hesitate. “Faith, family, and friends. That’s it. And Pawnee was part of that for me.”

She added, “Now that I’ve been through it, I want to help others get through it, too.”

Becky’s story is a reminder that persistence matters—and that behind every approval letter is someone who refused to give up.
