Gregory’s Story — Journey to Confidence & Independence

Finding Hope Through Employment

At Pawnee Mental Health, we believe that employment is more than just a paycheck—it’s an opportunity to build confidence, independence, and hope for the future. That’s the foundation of our Individual Placement & Support (IPS) program, which pairs individuals living with mental illness with specialists who help them find, secure, and keep meaningful jobs in the community.

For Gregory Staley, born and raised in Beloit, the journey hasn’t been easy. From the very start, Gregory faced challenges, beginning life weighing only three pounds and carrying the effects of mental illness from day one. “Growing up wasn’t easy,” Gregory shared. “Those early experiences shaped who I am today, but I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.”

Gregory was referred to Pawnee in December 2023 and quickly began working with the IPS team to take the steps needed toward employment. With guidance and encouragement, Gregory completed all the necessary paperwork, navigated the application process, and learned the skills required to maintain a job. Alongside IPS, Pawnee’s Adult Community Services team provided extra support, helping Gregory keep up with daily routines like cooking, cleaning, and managing an apartment.

For Gregory, the impact has been life changing. “Pawnee has helped me in many important ways. With their support, I’ve been working toward having the ability to hold a job instead of just staying at home. They’ve helped me learn coping strategies and lifestyle skills that make everyday life more manageable.”

Beyond employment, Gregory has found balance in bike rides, music, and the encouragement of a men’s Bible study group. Looking ahead, Gregory hopes to maintain steady employment, improve communication with family, and continue building confidence in daily life.

“I wish people understood more about forgetfulness and memory issues,” Gregory reflected. “Sometimes it’s hard for others to see what I go through. But with Pawnee’s support, I’m moving forward.”

Gregory’s story is one of courage, resilience, and hope— and a powerful reminder of why programs like IPS matter. By combining employment with ongoing mental health support, IPS helps individuals not just survive, but thrive in their communities.
