Leicha’s Story — “Pawnee Changed My Life”

A journey from trauma and isolation to healing, hope, and renewed purpose through Adult Community Services.

"If it wasn't for Pawnee, I don't know where I'd be. I feel like they saved my life." — Leicha Kennedy

From pain to purpose: How community support gave Leicha her life back

Deep struggle and painful experiences have marked Leicha Kennedy’s life. From an early age, she faced severe physical and emotional abuse. Her mother, overwhelmed by her own challenges, couldn’t offer the support Leicha desperately needed, leaving her to navigate the pain alone. By the time Leicha was 17, she was running away, pregnant and trying to escape the trauma that had shaped her childhood. Although she graduated high school and became a mother, the wounds from her past never truly healed.

By the time Leicha turned 23, the cycle of trauma and pain had taken its toll on her mental health. She felt isolated, lost and disconnected from those around her. For years, she battled severe anxiety, depression and an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. The medication Leicha was on made her constantly groggy, and much of her time was spent sleeping.

It wasn’t until she bravely decided to leave New York and move to Kansas, at her daughter’s urging, that Leicha found a glimmer of hope. In 2012, she was referred to Pawnee Mental Health, which began her journey toward healing.

Pawnee’s Adult Community Services program (ACS) gave Leicha the tools she needed to regain her lost strength and clarity. Through individual and group counseling, she began to rebuild her life one step at a time. The support she received helped her address her anxiety, restore her self-worth and confront the trauma she had carried for so long. “If it wasn’t for Pawnee,” Leicha says, “I don’t know where I’d be. I feel like they saved my life.”

ACS offers a wide range of services to those in need, including intensive case management, therapy sessions tailored to individual needs and support groups for shared experiences. For Leicha, the transformation has been nothing short of life-changing. She speaks fondly of the camaraderie she found in her group sessions, surrounded by people who truly understood her struggles. The program’s consistent schedule brought stability to her life, giving her the structure she had been missing.

What stands out most for Leicha is the personal care she’s received. “I’ve never had a problem with anyone at Pawnee. They truly care,” she says. Leicha said she has always felt heard, seen and valued, from her first case worker to the therapists and staff. Their support has helped her navigate therapy and medication, enabling her to find the right balance for her healing journey.

Through ACS, Leicha also discovered new hobbies that sparked her creativity and provided a much-needed outlet for her emotions. She found solace in photography, a sense of accomplishment in sewing and joy in tie-dyeing. These activities not only gave her something to look forward to but also allowed her to connect with others who shared her interests. Though her journey is ongoing, her gratitude for the program is evident. “I can’t thank Pawnee enough,” Leicha said. “They’ve given me my life back.”

Leicha’s story is a powerful example of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of support. With the help of Pawnee Mental Health’s Adult Community Services, she has overcome incredible obstacles and is now walking a path toward healing and hope. Her journey continues, and she knows that recovery is not a destination but a process. “I’ve come a long way,” Leicha reflects. “I know I’m not done yet, but I’m proud of how far I’ve made it.”
