Military Treatment Coordinator

Tyler Vela, MS (MAJ, CA)

How I help:
I joined Pawnee Mental Health as the Military Treatment Coordinator, where I support service members, veterans, and their families as they navigate mental health care and community resources. With more than 20 years of service in the Army Reserve and experience as a Civil Affairs officer, I understand the unique challenges that can come with military life, including deployments, family separation, and high-stress environments. My role focuses on helping bridge the gap between military experiences and civilian systems of care so individuals and families feel understood, supported, and connected to the services they need. Having previously worked at Pawnee Mental Health in Youth Services, I’m proud to return to an organization that values compassionate, community-based care. My goal is to ensure no one has to navigate mental health services alone and to help individuals feel seen, heard, and empowered to seek support.

My specialties:
I bring experience serving in high-stress and deployed environments through more than two decades in the Army Reserve. My background as a Civil Affairs officer has strengthened my ability to translate military culture and terminology into accessible, civilian-friendly language, helping individuals and families better understand available resources and care options. I also previously worked as a high school English teacher and as an Academic Coaching Manager at Kansas State University, experiences that further developed my communication and mentorship skills. I earned a Master of Science in Education in Curriculum and completed the Civil Affairs Qualification Course through the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School.

More about me:
I originally came to Manhattan, Kansas, for graduate school and chose to stay because of the strong sense of community I found here. This area has given so much to me both personally and professionally, and I’m grateful to continue serving the community through my work at Pawnee Mental Health. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling and experiencing local cultures, especially through food and shared experiences. My Army career provided opportunities to see different parts of the world and shaped my appreciation for diverse perspectives and meeting people where they are. I also enjoy running, spending time outdoors, and staying active, which helps me maintain the balance and resilience I encourage in others. Most importantly, I’m passionate about helping people navigate challenges and connect with support systems that work for them.
