Crisis Services and Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU)

Our mental health professionals are available around the clock, 365 days a year, to respond to crisis situations for children, teens, and adults. Pawnee provides many services that may be employed to meet each individual’s needs, including crisis assessments via emergency rooms, jails, and within the community. The 11-bed Crisis Stabilization Unit provides voluntary treatment for those experiencing an acute mental health crisis. Individuals receive intensive therapeutic services in a warm, supportive environment and then are assisted with transitioning back into the community with continued care and support. Pawnee’s crisis department employs licensed therapists (Co-Responders) that work alongside our Riley County Law Enforcement Officers and community-based staff that work inside the Riley County Jail, Pottawatomie County Jail, and some who work with our transitional housing population.

At any time someone (of any age) experiencing a crisis can call or come in person to Pawnee’s Crisis Stabilization Unit at 1558 Hayes Drive, Suite A, Manhattan KS, 66502. At CSU you will ring a doorbell to be let into the building. A crisis staff member will meet with you to complete demographic paperwork and then you will meet with a therapist for a crisis assessment. There may also be times when a therapist is unavailable at the CSU. A trained crisis staff member will assist in triaging the situation and help determine the best needs of the client.

**At times inpatient hospitalization may be the result of the triage or assessment. This may also require medical clearance from the local ER to access inpatient care per the requirements of the inpatient psychiatric facility.

For adults ages 18 and above, a referral may be made to our Crisis Stabilization Unit if that level of service is required.

We realize that taking the first step can be a BIG step. Below are photos of our actual facility so you can become familiar with our Crisis Stabilization Unit before coming through our doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I contact the Crisis Stabilization Unit?

The Crisis Stabilization Unit can be contacted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Call us at 800-609-2002 or for non-emergency calls 785-587-4302.

  • What should I bring with me?

If you anticipate staying and/or being referred for hospitalization, we recommend you bring three changes of clothes, minimal valuables, and your own medications (if any) in bottles. If you do not have medications with you, we can often work with a local pharmacy to re-issue several days’ worth or you can have a friend or family member bring them later on.

  • Do I need to call ahead, or can I just come to the Crisis Stabilization Unit?

Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can come directly to the Crisis Stabilization Unit. We are located at 1558 Hayes Drive Suite A, Manhattan, KS 66502. Come to the front door, press a buzzer, and a crisis staff member will meet with you to determine what services would best fit your needs. Those 18 years of age and older may be considered for care in our Crisis Stabilization Unit for ongoing assistance.

  • Will I see a psychiatrist every day like they do in the hospital?

No, however, the CSU has a psychiatric APRN who is available twice a week for medication-related appointments for those admitted to the CSU. Services provided include initial medication evaluations and follow-up medication checks only while admitted to the CSU. Once discharged an individual may continue to receive services through PMHS on an outpatient basis or another provider.

  • Can I leave and come back?

Yes! The CSU has a process for patients to sign in and out if safe and needs to maintain connections in the community that promote treatment success. Staying connected and engaged in life’s activities is important and a critical difference between CSU and hospitalization. This means if you have work, school, or other life commitments the CSU will make every effort to support an individual’s ability to meet those needs.

  • What if I want to leave?

The doors are unlocked from the inside. Everyone here is voluntary and here for their own recovery and stabilization. We will encourage you to do what is in the best interest of your health and safety. Of course, if you are imminently dangerous to yourself or others, we will have to let the authorities know, just like your outpatient provider would.

  • How much will this cost?

Clients with Medicaid will be fully covered. Clients with commercial insurance may have a copay/deductible for the therapy visits while here. Uninsured clients will likely qualify for a free or reduced rate.

  • How long can I stay?

Length of stay depends on how a person is doing and progressing in the resolution of their crisis. Average length of stay is 3-5 days.

  • Why does the Crisis Stabilization Unit need additional support?

For many who need to utilize the CSU there is no payer source. Clients with Medicaid are fully covered. Clients with commercial insurance may have a copay/deductible and the insurance may not cover all services. Clients with no insurance are charged on a sliding scale based on income. Expenses that a client or 3rd party payer doesn’t cover are written off by Pawnee. To ensure the viability of the CSU it is important that we find ways to reduce expenses while maintaining the high quality of care we provide to our clients.
