Community Foundation Makes Direct Impact to Those in Recovery

Posted Tuesday June 6, 2023

Pawnee Mental Health was awarded a $10,000 Greater Manhattan Community Foundation grant to support men in recovery while at the Discovery Sober Living House.

The Discovery Sober Living House was established in October 2022 after Pawnee and other local agencies recognized the lack of stable housing for those with co-occurring disorders of severe mental illness and substance use disorder. Sober living provides a communal recovery environment.

“The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation (GMCF) Grants for Greater Manhattan funds are pleased to support men working hard to improve their future,” Edee Nichols, Grants and Scholarship Coordinator, said. “Pawnee Mental Health has the staff, and home, for men working on their sobriety and mental health. Residents are working towards a sober lifestyle and learning skills to obtain a job and independent living. GMCF appreciates that Pawnee Mental Health identified a need, developed a plan, and found the resources to make it happen.”

The house aims to reduce the number of men in the Manhattan community who are experiencing untreated co-occurring conditions, negatively impacting them to act as productive citizens within society or live independently.

“The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation is a pillar for the community. Pawnee Mental Health is grateful for this group's efforts to support Manhattan and for choosing our project. We look forward to supporting men in recovery by providing a safe and supportive housing option,” Robbin Cole, CEO, said.

The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation started in 1999 with a mission-focused message to build relationships between donors and community needs. To learn more about the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, visit their website at www.mcfks.org/.
